The collection contains family papers primarily from Horace and Martha Nicholson McKay, Elizabeth Nicholson, Selma N. Steele, and Theodore L. Steele. Topics include the Consumer Gas Trust Co., North and All Souls Unitarian Churches, women's clubs, and spiritualism. Of special interest is the correspondnece between Martha N. McKay and suffragette Lucy Stone; accounts by former slaves on slave life and the underground railroad; a description of the original Butler University campus; a history of the West Richmond Friends Meeting; a letter about rifles being shipped to Knights of the Golden Circle; Selma N. A native of Indiana, Steele was primarily known as a landscape artist with an interest in Impressionism and as a member of the Hoosier School of art. He married Mary E. Lakin in 1870 and moved to Indianapolis, working primarily as a portrait painter. From 1880 to 1885 he studied in Munich, and returned to Indianapolis with an interest in landscape painting.
